Certain classes of paper have been hit with a glut, so that the cost to pick up paper, get it to a mill, remove the ink, re-pulp it and then create new paper is above that of new production. Glass is always a savings, so long as it isn't mixed glass, which requires removal and processing to remove impurities. Thus savings in recycling must count the entire cycle, not just the sending it back part. Not littering is a great boon to us all and shows responsible stewardship of our common lands.

Those are not all the same issue and even within a given category there are differences and changes in market that need to be addressed. There is money to be made in reducing effluent, co-generation and co-use systems when they can be designed from the start to do so or easily retrofitted into the system. Such things as algal based oil generation are good, and are a fine way to re-capture some lost heat at some industrial plants and generating stations. I doubt we have enough of those to actually deal with our fuel needs, however, as they still require industrial waste heat to start with and you never get all that energy back no matter what you do. This is why One Size Fits All laws can have bad consequences: they fit none well. And once cost savings and even revenue are demonstrated from such systems, if the law went away does anyone believe that we would see a reversion to costlier, less efficient systems? For garbage, perhaps, although automation is already playing a large role there for separation of garbage into metals, glass, paper, plastic and biologicals... so if that is cheaper to run then separate waste streams on collection, would you still want separate and more costly pick-up systems when one can do it all?

The proposition that carbon dioxide, nitrogen compounds and other forms of gaseous waste effect the climate more than the environment is one that can be proposed, but other aerosols that tend to reduce sunlight must also be included. Regulation without gauging impact to industry and probability of benefit means that you don't care about the cost and what the benefit actually is. That is not an unknown part of economics, yet I have never seen any AGW supporter do a proper cost/benefit analysis based on economic factors because those all have ranges and percentages, plus best and worst case scenarios with and without changes... a 1% loss of productivity sounds small, but compounded year on year and you get a huge net loss of capacity which directly impacts the economy, living standards and even such things as research for newer methods of power generation.

That, too, is a system.

Mother Earth has killed over 95% of all species over time. Don't antrthropomorphize her... you really don't want the mother with the bloody meatcleaver as your image.A Jacksonianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07607888697879327120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7370534.post-75216545143260840302010-02-16T18:16:24.900-08:002010-02-16T18:16:24.900-08:00So wait. Changing the numbers and locations of temperture measurements is fine if you have a point to make. And then I also knew it was warmer in the middle ages---nope I wasn't there, but it would explain the muslim advances from north Africa into southern Europe. No warming, arctic ice back where it was after jet stream patterns shifted it a bit, ocean temps heading downward as seen via the ARGO buoy system, oversampling of urban heat-island weather stations, and minor things like discovering the ocean was 1m higher 81,000 years ago and carbon dioxide levels were the same or lower than today.

Throw in the problems with the CRU, GISS, NOAA, and tree-ring sampling data and you got yourself a grand Charlie-Foxtrot going on in the climatology business.
