Bloviating Zeppelin: The Meaning Of The Test

(in-ep-toc'-ra-cy) - a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

The Meaning Of The Test

Everyone now knows that North Korea detonated a smaller nuclear device underground in defiance of the world community.

The U.S. Geological Survey said it had detected a 4.2 magnitude tremor in North Korea at 10:35 local time (0135 GMT). The Japan Meteorological Agency said its data showed a tremor took place around Gifu, on the peninsula's northeast coast around 110 km (70 miles) from the Chinese border.

But what does it mean and what steps should be taken?

President Bush said the "United States condemns this provocative act." The UN security council met once already and will meet this afternoon; the UN prepares to review a US draft resolution. And no one on the security council has made any noise of support for North Korea. Oddly enough both China and Russia have condemned the test.

But there's more to the mix -- politics, naturally. South Korea, Taiwan, Japan -- are extremely concerned about this test because, of course, the likelihood of nuclear tipped missiles pointed in a given direction -- well, that direction will be at them -- and us as in US. North Korean missiles potentially targeted at Russia or China? Not a chance.

Kim Jong-il wants to force reunification with South Korea. And the only way to achieve this end is militarily. NK already invaded South Korea once and Seoul was demolished. KJi has an army of more than a million soldiers and they predominantly exist near the southern border. Would KJi think twice about going nuclear against the south? I am not confident he has the ability to understand the ramifications of such a move and that places him into the "beyond dangerous" category.

KJi's NK has a rancid economy and hundreds of thousands of his countrymen and women have perished due to starvation, executions and in "labor" camps. With North Korea now being, what, the 8th Nuclear Nation? -- and dying for cash, what is the "logical extension?" I fear the logical extension may be for NK to sell one of their upcoming nuclear devices to another rogue state or, worse, to terrorist factions such as al Qaeda, Hamas, the Palestinian Authority -- you name it.

What should be done?

Some will consider "economic sanctions" too harsh, due to the overall poor condition of the North Korean populace. I would suggest that is only a place to begin.

We should, in addition, make it clear that we are monitoring NK's airspace, and any missile sites indicating preparations for launch will be hit in a pre-emptive strike.

We should also make it clear that future missile launches, now that North Korea is a nuclear power, will be considered an active attempt at a nuclear strike against the surrounding states (more than likely South Korea) and perhaps even the United States, and will be met with military retaliation up to and possibly including a nuclear response.

And where is China in all of this?

I am unsure. I am, however, sure that China is doing its overt and covert best to ensure the diminishment of the United States; some believe that there will be a war between ourselves and China. We have sworn to defend Taiwan -- and China has sworn to bring Taiwan into line.

China wants to be the world Superpower and has expanded its military shockingly. It too is becoming not only a military powerhouse but an economic one and will, resultingly, more and more want to confront us not only in the petroleum market but with petroleum-producing nation-states. It has to; there is no other option. And do not think that it is not eyeballing the oil under Russia. A Russian/China link? Japan went to war with us when we limited their oil and steel. And China?

These are dangerous, dangerous times. But sooner or later we will have to fish or cut bait. How will we meet this clear and obvious threat and the overarching global threats?

Chance: Yes, I feel there will be a war between America and china the Chinese secretively I believe are telling the North Korean Leader what it is ok to do and what not to do. I feel also that the North Korean leader got China’s permission to test his nuclear bomb. China is secretively preparing for war with America and America’s allies China wants the North Koreas to help them fight against America. I wrote an essay titled the four horsemen of the apocalypse based upon revelation the 6th chapter pale horse (yellow horse) is china and China going to kill up millions of Americans and Japanese and the whole world will fear. China will hit America with nuclear weapons and America will hit China with nuclear weapons. America and Russia will unite to fight against the China and its allies but China will finish off Russia and the United States of America in this war. The Chinese Army is terribly powerful and a very angry and furious government controls china. Chinese soldiers will possibly come through Alaska headed for America; America will launch nuclear weapons or powerful bombs to repel them. But this won’t keep them away it is going to get ugly scary fear, death, dread, and suicide will be every where.

SAD HUH!

Take care, ZEP
And good post DUDE!

More and more, I fear, the world is becoming a place where problem resolution, due to technology and weapons access, is moving from a political or diplomatic venue into a military-response venue. With the possession by small groups, geographic locations, minimal nation-states or motivated factions of CBW devices, discussion can be set aside for strongarm tactics and, due to these potential tactics, verbal or face-to-face negotiation becomes a bit moot when these threats can readily be enabled.

What is the point of North Korea, for example, attempting to carry a dialogue with South Korea and convince the countries to come under common rule under, of course, Kim Jong-il, when dialogue is no longer necessary, i.e., a nuclear device can do all the speaking necessary.

That does not, naturally, mean that North Korea wouldn't suffer should it choose that path; not the least of which could be the problem of prevailing winds on the day of detonation and the proximity of SK to NK -- and the ramifications of world response to such a detonation. Kim Jong-il, I do not believe, has the capacity to understand what moving beyond sabre-rattling and into the mushroom cloud category really means.

Well BZ there are no easy options thats for sure.
N.K could over run S.K very quickly if we were not as quick with our response to the aggression.
China: although folks fear their numbers and Nuke's would not have an easy time of taking any country militarily. least of which is America, that will never happen. We would have to do something unheard of in this time though, UNITE.

China NK and Iran as well as Russia to some degree would not only have to deal with the U.S. but England, S.K, Japan, Australia, Poland Germany, and even eventually France.

The only for sure in a WW3 scenario is mutually assured destruction. once one Nuke goes off in an act of aggression, Many will follow.

When N.K gives their weapon to a terrorist org. and the proof is concrete that they did, N.K will get our full military attention.
We have a few Nuke Subs sitting just out side of N.K waters carrying enough WMD that if the order was given N.K would cease to exist.

Uh... Chance may be right but I promise you I really hope he is wrong.

I'm more inclined to agree with AC. I don't believe we will take this sitting down, and you are right... it is time to "fish or cut bait!" I feel all of this will come to a head very soon. *sigh* We don't have any idea any more what we will be waking up to when we go to bed at night, do we? Looks like America has joined the rest of the world in that respect.

Sorry, but this scares the crap out of me. I mean, wait.. First of all, Blo you did an EXCELLENT post with GREAT observations and logical extensions.

I am concerned more for my children. The thought of us being nuked and living through it is a nightmare scenario, but it will happen. It is GOING to happen and that has been said by many.

Just do the 'logical extension'.. You have crazy leaders like Kim Yong Il, and AHmadinejab, and Chavez etc.. These guys are literally crazy.. Then you ahve the socialist libs in our country who are nuts. Sheesh.. We are primed for a nuke attack. America can only handle so much.

Think of Syria going into Israel, and Iran joining with them, then N.Korea attacks S. Korea, and we have a full scale world war involving nukes. Then China gets involved. It is a scary scenario, but I think it is only a matter of time.

I often wonder if we didn't have such nutty libs and spineless republicans in congress if we would be better off? I wonder if the world sees us as weak now and they sense it is an opportune time. Bush has been raked over the coals by the libs and some republicans for Iraq. Democracy in Iraq could really change things over there if it takes hold. For that reason and others, I am glad we are there.

Chance has some great points. I am not skilled in revelations, but I do know China, Russia and Syria are involved. From what I understand, Syria goes down though. But CHina and Russia are supposed to band together and go after some other nation.. I know AMerica is not mentioned in Revelation so I don't know how we fit into it.

Anyway, that is my speel.. Great post BLo..

Mr. Z - This is China's problem, by and large, and they have mishandled it. To protect Our Friends and Allies, it is time to institute the Nuclear Neighborhood Option and recognize that democracies that have learned to be responsible Nations can and should defend themselves from Nuclear armed tyrants. The thought of a nuclear armed Japan gives all of Asia pause... and they will be *backed* by the United States. Follow that up with South Korea and Taiwan, both able and capable Governments that are under this nuclear threat. And, finally, let China pay a tariff and bring Taiwan into the fold of fully recognized Nations in a Two-China policy... or really a China and Taiwan policy as Taiwan is heavily different ethnically and politically from the mainland.

Let Asia know that We stand with Friends and Allies. And quietly let China know that we are serious about this and that the *only* way they can stop it is to bring North Korea down. Their lack of actions should have repercussions, and one of those is finally kissing 'good-bye' to Taiwan. It can already defend itself well... give it nuclear devices, Aegis capability and other defensive abilities and it will stoutly defend itself against China and stand as its own Nation. China needs to pay in a currency they understand: loss of their dream, loss of face, loss of honor and place.

We used to know that coin *well*.

Rebecca: and you may have read by now that, in terms of Syria, they are poised to strike Israel and they believe that Israel plans to invade them (by the Golan Heights, I assume?)? Now Syria poses an immediate threat to Israel meaning that we shall become likewise involved in some fashion. Unknown which way that will move.

AJ: Yep, China messed up and perhaps are beginning to acknowledge that slightly by their "condemnation" of NK's test -- though they don't want sanctions, of course.

All excellent points, AJ, but I fear again that our admin will not make that distinction and delineation because that would be overtly judgmental.

Boys and girls, the GOP has finally shot itself in the second to last of its two remaining toes, and may have assured a Dem takeover not only in the House, perhaps the Senate, but perhaps even the 08 Presidential race.

Then we shall be well and truly fucked.

Blo, I just heard Rush say the contrary and I really hope he is right. he thinks these polls are bunk and we may pick up seats.

This whole mess made me apply for an absentee ballot to make sure I vote. not that I wouldn't, but I am anxious now. I do not want the libs to win. I will vote for a republican even if he isn't socially where I want him and I am a staunch conservative. It is that important. We are, as you said, F... if the libs win.

Seriously, the libs screwed us with taxes and I have never felt so oppressed. I remember getting raises when I used to work and with each raise more taxes got taken out. I barely could survive as a single and I was middle to low income level. You tell me how that is just 'giving the rich a break?' as the libs like to quote.

Truly it is the middle income earners and families who live off of one income, and small business' that get raped under the libs. tax plan. We got screwed by the Clinton Marriage penalty and when we owned a small business, we really took it. People forget they don't go by the income you make minus debt, but by total income meaning your real job and your part time business. So, it could put people who are struggling in higher tax brackets. Yes, there are breaks you get and stuff, but it really made our life miserable.

These lower taxes have really helped us get back on our feet.

Our family will go under if the libs win.. Plain and simple. They will repeal the tax cuts.

Besides that, they will whimp out on the war on terror and not go after these rogue nations that threaten us. They don't believe people really can be evil. It is a shame. We are voting for sure!!

Rebe,

I fail to see how you can attribute NK's nuclear test to the failure of liberals when it is the republicans that control both houses of Congress and the White House.

I think BZ is on point about China making a miscalculation with NK - and so did the Bush administration. Since his "Axis of Evil" speech - Iraq is on the verge of a civil war, Iran is pursuing nuclear technology and now North Korea has (possibly) tested a nuke. None of which has anything to do with any liberal policy.

I don't see Bush pressing hard to go to war with NK or Iran (rogue nations).

Taiwan is not going to declare their independency because they are pragmatic about pushing China. If anything, the Japanese response to this is the most important one to watch.

The reality is that we are going to have to adjust to a nuclear armed NK and Japan. Eventually Iran will become a nuclear power and so will some South American countries. Countries are not going to respond to what the US wants but to their own regional security issues.

As for the economy, you can blame most of the middle class issues on globalization. We are competing with India and China for skilled and unskilled labor. We have illegal immigrants pushing down wages in this country and when it comes to taxes – I don’t know how much money you make but I didn’t see a difference in my check.

Rebecca: I've voted absentee for a number of years and find it very convenient and assuring of my partaking in the political process, primarily because of the great distance between my home and work. And it is a given that taxes will increase under a Demo control.

James: we are reaping the alleged benefits of 1994 and the "Agreed Framework." You may not be aware, we were prepared with plans drawn up by the Pentagon to send 50,000 troops to South Korea, along with 400 aircraft, 50 ships, Apache helos, Bradley vehicles and Patriot missiles. We went so far as to send 250 soldiers in as an advance in anticipation of setting up an HQ. WJC braked this plan and sent Carter through the back door.

Under the AF, we agreed not to invade DPROK, that we provide two light water nuke reactors "for power." One nuke was delivered, then a second. ROK never allowed inspectors back in. ROK never shipped its fuel rods out of the country.

From reading the "Agreed Framework" history it seems to me that if this is the cause then it is the GOP controlled Congress that is at fault.

I'm really not sure the the AF is a good idea or not. It does seem to be giving the NK government an out - but I think it is much better to be on the inside and monitoring what is going on rather than ignoring them and tossing idle threats.

Like this one: North Korea "can have a future or it can have these weapons. It cannot have both," Assistant Secretary of State Christopher R. Hill said yesterday in remarks at Johns Hopkins University's U.S.-Korea Institute.

Ok, so now they have a weapon (maybe) but we have to assume that they do. This administration and its cowboy talk always come home to roost.

That cowboy talk? I'm not convinced. I am convinced, however, that when persons do not immediately roll over to pressure or violence, then pressure and violence is definitely ratcheted up because one did NOT roll.

James,
If you want to know the truth about who's fault it is regarding North Korea having Nukes, check out this brilliant piece:

"Unfortunately for them, the psychotic Kim Jong Il seems to be setting off nukes, raising the embarrassing issue of the Clinton administration's 1994 "peace" deal with North Korea.

At least with former Rep. Mark Foley, you could say the Democrats' hypocritical grandstanding was just politics. But in the case of North Korea, Democrats are resorting to bald-faced lies.

Current New Mexico governor and former Clinton administration official Bill Richardson has been on tour, bragging about the groundbreaking Clinton administration negotiations with North Korea — keeping his fingers crossed that no one has access to news from 1994.

In 1994, the Clinton administration got a call from Jimmy Carter — probably collect — who was with the then-leader of North Korea, saying: "Hey, Kim Il Sung is a total stud, and I've worked out a terrific deal. I'll give you the details later."

Clinton promptly signed the deal, so he could forget about North Korea and get back to cheating on Hillary. Mission accomplished.

Under the terms of the "agreed framework," we gave North Korea all sorts of bribes — more than $5 billion worth of oil, two nuclear reactors and lots of high technology. In return, they took the bribes and kept building nukes. This wasn't difficult, inasmuch as the 1994 deal permitted the North Koreans to evade weapons inspectors for the next five years.

Yes, you read that right: North Korea promised not to develop nukes, and we showed how much we trusted them by agreeing to no weapons inspections for five years.

The famed "allies," whom liberals claim they are so interested in pleasing, went ballistic at this cave-in to North Korea. Japan and South Korea — actual allies, unlike France and Germany — were furious. Even Hans Blix thought we were being patsies.

If you need any more evidence that it was a rotten deal, The New York Times hailed it as "a resounding triumph."

At the time, people like William Safire were screaming from the rooftops that allowing North Korea to escape weapons inspections for five years would "preclude a pre-emptive strike by us if North Korea, in the next U.S. president's administration, breaks its agreement to freeze additional bomb-making."

And then on Oct. 17, 2002 — under a new administration, you'll note — The New York Times reported on the front page, so you couldn't have missed it: "Confronted by new American intelligence, North Korea has admitted that it has been conducting a major clandestine nuclear weapons development program for the past several years."

So when it comes to North Korea, I believe the Democrats might want to maintain a discreet silence, lest anyone ask, "Hey, did you guys do anything with North Korea?"

But by Richardson's lights, the only reason Kim Jong Il is testing nukes is because Bush called him evil. He said, "When you call him axis of evil or a tyrant, you know, he just goes crazy." This is the sort of idiocy you expect to hear from an illiterate like Keith Olbermann, not someone who might know people who read newspapers.

Richardson also blames the war in Iraq, bleating that the poor North Koreans feel "that there's too much attention on the Middle East, on Iraq. So it's a cry for attention." If Kim just wanted our attention, he could have started dating Lindsay Lohan. But Richardson says Kim "psychologically feels he's been dissed, that he's not treated with respect."

Damn that Bush! If only he had ignored the crazy Muslims and dedicated himself into sending flowers (and more nuclear reactors!) to North Korea, we could be actively helping Kim develop his nukes like the Clinton administration did."

The above quote was written by none other than Ann Coulter in her latest Column.

Just thought you might want to know the truth. The liberals are the ones with pie in their face regarding North Korea right now.
